Character Analysis: John Updike A&P
John Updikeââ¬â¢s story entitled ââ¬Å"A&Pâ⬠is a portrayal of a man who looks for his personality and pride. The storyteller of this story is likewise the primary character â⬠Sammy. This hero is a straightforward man â⬠a basic food item representative and an observer.Because of this activity, Sammy used to watch his costumers and the vibe of the A&P. In any case, because of one circumstance that happened into the supermarket, Sammy acknowledges numerous things and gives him certain activities that transformed him. Being the fundamental character of the store, Sammy shows various feelings â⬠cheerful, furious, pitiful, confounded, and bewildered. That is the reason Sammy is an image of changing personality from the earliest starting point up to the finish of the story. In expressions of compassion towards Sammyââ¬â¢s character, I have seen that Updike utilizes various components and components to show feelings and activities originating from the primary character. It is to give strife, peak, and goals to the story. the creator feel for Sammyââ¬â¢s character that can be found toward the finish of the story where Sammy understands that he has no activity and the universes won't be a superior spot for him anymore. This part shows compassion one might say that the creator causes the character to understand the unavoidable truth and didn't just discharge the arrangement of the contention. Updike shows the avocation and thought of Sammy after he quit his place of employment, which is a type of compassion to the character.Because the character originates from a white collar class, the language is easygoing and straight. In the start of the story, we could see that Sammy is extremely attentive with individuals or with his condition. When Sammy needs to communicate his emotions, he shows it straightforwardly with no type of pretention. From this reality, it characterizes the personality of Sammy as a typical character with respect and prid e. In any case, the manner in which he depicts things or individuals is emotional it could be said that he gives precise creative mind to feel and comprehend his observations. Supposedly by, we could ready to show that Sammy begins to communicate his activities and words together that changed his path.Sammy is effortlessly influenced by his condition. This is the most critical attribute that he appeared all through the story. From the earliest starting point up to the finish of the story, Sammy builds up an idea of being influenced to everything that occurs in his condition. From this reality, we could recognize that Sammy is a creation of fascination, interest, inadequacy, and differentiation. Every one of these elements restore the brain and activities of Sammy towards others like Quennie and Lengel. In my own perception, I can say that Sammyââ¬â¢s persona is dynamic since his activities and inspirations are not steady. Supposedly on, Sammyââ¬â¢s character hoist starting with one factor then onto the next. In the start of the story, Sammy is a perceptive. At the point when he saw Queenie in a bathing suit, he began to investigate things. When Lengel enters the scene and goes up against the women in bathing suit, Sammy converses with Lengel. When Sammy believes that Lengelââ¬â¢s activities are counter-intuitive, he leaves his place of employment. His activities had a procedure to set up his character â⬠not only a static development of his identity. From these, I can say that Sammy is a decent character that can be played. He is adaptable enough to alter in various situations. This is the thing that I like with his character. Regardless of whether he is trick, direct, and ââ¬Ëweirdââ¬â¢ character, there is an idea of knowledge that exists in his persona. It shows that Sammy was not effectively controlled by his condition however he could think and become flexible to show who he truly is.Work CitedUpdike, John. A&P.

The Most Persuasive Essay Topics on Religion
The Most Persuasive Essay Topics on ReligionWhat are the most persuasive essay topics on religion? This is a question that I have often asked myself. For me, there has always been an interesting paradox about religion and many of the world's religions.Religion is often seen as something that happened in the past and nothing more than a minor distraction from what you should be doing to better understand religious history. For me, this is a farce. I am convinced that the discussion of religions can be productive and enlightening for the future. It seems to me that religion and our fascination with it has been used by people as a way to make money. By enticing us with a sense of spirituality and mysticism, these religions have worked to their advantage. They have helped to sell products, services and ideas. They have also motivated us to act on behalf of religion.Let's look at some specific examples. Lets look at a church that believes in flying beings that are believed to live on other planets in the universe. Now, if you talk to a Christian church about the possible existence of such beings, you may get the best explanations that there is, but let's say for argument's sake that they are indeed not.If you talk to a church that believes in these extraterrestrial beings, you may hear things like 'If you believe in aliens and you believe there are intelligent beings who visit your planet, then why would God allow harm to come to his son Jesus?' Obviously this gives someone an explanation for what happened on earth and why Jesus was born in the first place. Of course it takes on a different form for each person but I believe it is a fair assumption. Now lets look at a Catholic church that says that there is a hell that is worse than this world that we know of and that we are going to go to for eternity. Now, if you talk to a Christian church about this subject, you may hear about an 'eternal damnation' because Jesus died on the cross for your sins. These are two of the many examples that I could give about how the church can be misused to help religious groups gain leverage. Now the Christian church has been doing this for a long time. In fact, the apostles tried to establish a real Gospel that their followers should believe so that the world would turn to God and worship the cross for its goodness.I think this is a controversial topic, but I would argue that it is not against the rules of logic. I think it is up to us to stop the abuse. We should always remember the words of St. Francis of Assisi 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth'.

Young Goodman Brown from a Moral Standpoint - 1352 Words
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. At the age of four, his father passed away from yellow fever, forcing his family to move in with his uncle. The positively influential Uncle Robert Manning pushed Hawthorne to succeed in school and insisted he go to college. Following his education at Bowdoin College, Hawthorne spent years in isolation mastering the art of writing. It was during those years when Hawthorne discovered that his ancestors were founders and Puritan leaders of the Salem witch trials. Shortly after this tragic finding, he wrote ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brown,â⬠a tale that is considered one of the greatest in American literature. Analyzing Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s work from a moral perspective can help illuminate his shortâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦She represents Goodman Brownââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"faithâ⬠or his religious intentions throughout the story. The setting of the story also plays a significant role in Hawthorneââ¬â¢s moral story set in symbolism. As Brown travels further into the depths of the forest, he feels more fearful and unsafe, saying to himself, ââ¬Å"there may be a devilish Indian behind every tree. What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!â⬠(Hawthorne 27). Therefore, to iterate the previously stated passage from an analystââ¬â¢s point of view: the tale begins with ââ¬Å"good manâ⬠Brown leaving faith to spend a night in fear and uncertainty in order to experiment with the devil. But if young Goodman Brown is such a moral being, then why would he experiment with the devil in the first place? According to German philosopher Immanuel Kant, ââ¬Å"conscience is an instinct to pass judgment upon ourselves in accordance with moral lawsâ⬠(Kant 93). Brown did not pass judgment on himself when he decided to experiment with the devil because he knew he had an escape with his wife. Faith was, in his eyes, the purest human being on the face of the Earth and when he became bored with his trial, he could go back and enjoy religious sanctuary with her. Once he discovered the presence of his wife at the ceremony, Brown begins to scream Faithââ¬â¢s name (Hawthorne 32). Ian McKellen poised between exhibitionism and greatness Essay Example For Students
Ian McKellen: poised between exhibitionism and greatness Essay Knighthood hasnt changed Ian McKellens passion for barnstorming. The headline-making British actor, whos old enough to know better, actually made touring a condition of his return to Londons Royal National Theatre back in 1990, when artistic director Richard Eyre asked him aboard. He got his wish. The Nationals critically acclaimed production of Shakespeares Richard III, directed by Eyre and starring McKellen, has already logged hundreds of thousands of miles in an ambitious international tour that has crisscrossed the United Kingdom, Eastern and Western Europe, Egypt and Japan. A 16-week American circuit kicks off June 9-21 at New Yorks Brooklyn Academy of Music, to be followed by stops in Washington, D.C., St. Paul, Denver, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Theres an energy that comes with being away from home, explains McKellen in a recent interview, sounding more like a supplementary extra whos seen too many backstage movies than a seasoned 53-year-old veteran of regional repertory, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the West End and Broadway. The company gets to know each other so much better than we could ever do in London sharing late nights, going out to eat together, falling in love with each other which is the essence of what a theatre company should be. The trust you have in each other is unforced. A villain made to order The trust you have in journalists is understandably less so, but McKellen is nothing if not game. No question and hes surely heard them all by now puts a dent in his civility, his slightly shopworn graciousness. Padding around his suite at New Yorks Waldorf Hotel in stocking feet and shirtsleeves, McKellen answers on the fly not out of nervous energy, but a kind of absent-mindedness while periodically checking the view through the slats of the Venetian blinds or balancing one crystal ashtray atop another, touching down from time to time to draw a conclusion with kindly, level-gazed, this-point-is-just-for-you attentiveness. Hes careful to explain, for instance, that doing Richard III wasnt his idea. Richard Eyre and I decided to do two plays and I was left alone to determine what they should be. Id just seen Deborah Warners production of Titus Andronicus and I was keen to work with her. But the only thing she really wanted to do was work again with Brian Cox who played Titus and do King Lear. So there I was, an actor doing a job he doesnt normally do producing having invited a director who immediately says she wants another actor to play the leading part in the only thing she wants to do. I think a lot of people at the National were laughing up their sleeves at how badly Id mismanaged the situation. It was all perfectly amicable to me, but Richard Eyre did call me into his office and say, |Youve got to find yourself a leading part. You can tell what sort of producer I am; I just want people to be happy. Eventually, Richard III was selected because of its ability to be cross-cast with Lear (which has since been dropped from the tour) and not incidentally because it contained a whacking good leading part for Ian McKellen. The role of Shakespeares delectable actor-villain would seem perfectly suited to this performers particular gifts: McKellens stage presence is forever poised, it seems to me, between shameless (but thrilling) exhibitionism and the possibility of greatness. Yet his Richard (which I saw when it first opened at the National) is a surprise: not the strutting vainglorious schemer I expected, but an icily poised and far more dangerous political careerist. Richard had just directed Tumbledown, a film about the Falklands war, McKellen recalls, so when I said I thought Richard was a play about a soldier, something clicked. From that day on we never thought of it as anything other than a modern story. We began taking him very, very seriously, and to put him a little bit nearer our own time. .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 , .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .postImageUrl , .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 , .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723:hover , .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723:visited , .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723:active { border:0!important; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723:active , .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723 .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0e77df25e74961ee65fb149099094723:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Addams Family Musical EssayThese parts are up for grabs Was he daunted by memories of Anthony Shers dazzling 1984 Richard III, hailed by many as the first significant challenge to Oliviers claim on the role? I thought his performance was wonderfully extraordinary and slightly at odds with the text, comments McKellen with a characteristic mix of hyperbole and tact. It wasnt the Richard that I wanted to play, so it wasnt a great block for me. I dont think these parts belong to anybody. Theyre up for grabs all the time. Though McKellen is now himself regarded as the pre-eminent classical actor of his generation in England, he winces at the appellation. I hate to be thought of as that person who does old plays, he sighs. But to apologize for myself its just easier to do a good play than a bad play. By and large, most modern plays are not very good. I mean, why should they be? Most Elizabethan plays were not very good. I do now regret that Im not in touch with modern dramatists, but I dont see the giant writer I ought to be working with. David Hare recently wrote me a part, but I couldnt do it because of other commitments. Id love to do David Mamets plays I admire them enormously but Im not temperamentally suited and Im not competent enough to enter the American psyche or sound American, so Im cut off from that. The trouble is, having done Shakespeare, everything else is less rewarding. When the Richard tour is finished, McKellen plans a temporary hiatus from the stage in order to pursue film and television work. And after that, he muses, he may well venture into non-classical territory. Whatever else the next couple of years may mean professionally for McKellen, they will undoubtedly be marked by his continued activism in support of gay causes, a subject the actor tackles with obvious zest. Since coming out in 1988, McKellen has consistently pushed for greater public awareness of gay issues, and his recent knighthood (though a cause of some controversy within the British gay community) has only heightened his already high-profile homosexuality. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever, he declares. Coming out was the most important thing Ive ever done, the mantra continues, the most rewarding, the most fulfilling, and it absolutely changed my life for the better. Why is there no one in American show business who is doing something similar? I know from my experience it can have an enormous effect. I was 49 when I came out so I cant lecture anybody else on what they should do, and Im not a fan of outing. But in a country where you have gay doctor organizations, gay nurses, gay teachers, gay congressmen, gay policemen, gay lumberjacks for all I know there arent any gay actors? Well, yes, a few, but nobody the public knows about. And thats a shame. And yet in England, theres Simon Callow, Michael Cashman, Alec McCowen, Tony Sher, the comedian Stephen Fry, directors like Tim Luscombe and Sean Mathias, producers like Cameron Mackintosh - Only men? Women have said to me, look, its bad enough being a woman, dont ask me to be lesbian on top of it. Where the American theatre does distinguish itself on the question of gay awareness, McKellen believes (and now hes ticking off more names: Martin Sherman, Harvey Fierstein, Larry Kramer, Tony Kushner), is in the emergence of noteworthy gay playwrights. The public witness of those writers cant be matched by any English writers. I mean, Noel Coward? Terence Rattigan? Peter Gill? They touch on gay issues, but they dont acknowledge that theyre gay themselves. Its an interesting cultural difference, and worthy of an essay by somebody, isnt it? That barnstorming glint again.

Urban Villagers by Herbert J Gans Essay Example For Students
Urban Villagers by Herbert J Gans Essay Bostons West End is the most well documented neighborhood destroyed by urban renewal, made famous initially by Herbert Ganss book, The Urban Villagers, 1962. Although approximately 63 percent of the families displaced by urban renewal were African-American or Hispanic, this Boston community was mainly inhabited by working class Italians. It was a little piece of Italy, with narrow winding streets alive with urban social life. Too crowded and unAmerican for the middle class tastes of City planners, it fell to the bulldozer in 1959 and was replaced by high rise, expensive apartment buildings. It is difficult for me to isolate the impact of *URBAN VILLAGERS*. Inmy experience it was but one contribution to growing criticism of urbanrenewal in the early 1960s and, with that, the physical orientation ofurban planning that urban renewal represented. Shortly after it waspublished I was both a writing my dissertation in urban geography atClark University and a project director in urban renewal, so Iwitnessed the impact in both urban renewal planning circles and in themore academic arena. We will write a custom essay on Urban Villagers by Herbert J Gans specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now It was part of the drum of criticism that led tothe 1966 Model Cities Act and the redefinition of urban renewal andrethinking of the field of urban planning.I think the impact of the *URBAN VILLAGERS* might best evaluated aspart of a creeping barrage of critical writing led off by Jacobs and*Death and Life . . . * in 1961. *Urban Villagers* was published in63 and Martin Anderson weighed in from the right in 64 with *The FederalBulldozer*. At the same time planners such as Paul Davidoff (Advocacyand Pluralism in Planning JAIP, 1965) were mounting a critique withinthe field of planning. (Jay Steins *Classic Readings in UrbanPlanning* 1995 includes some writing from this period. ) In 1965,The National Council of Mayors published *With Heritage So Rich* whichdocumented the destruction of historic buildings caused by urban renewaland served as the mandate for the National Historic Preservation Act of1966. Although not concerned with urban renewal directly, Blakes*Gods Own Junkyard* (1964) was a popular and graphically arrestingtreatment of the trashing of the built environment. My own memory isthat so much was being written that we were responding to the larger At the same time the Federal urban renewal program was trying to moveaway from the great emphasis on redevelopment by demolition with theinitiation of the Community Renewal Program (CRP) in 1959, which wasmore neighborhood and socially oriented. And the final element I willthrow in this stew is the Highway Act of 1962 which started themetropolitan transportation studies, the goal of which was to bring theinterstate system to cities. Many cities such as Hartford tried tocoordinate the urban interstate system with urban renewal; elsewherethe transportation planning of the state and the local urban renewalI would say, speaking from being in the trenches at that time, that the*Urban Villagers* did not have a big direct impact on urban renewal incities but, along with others, laid the groundwork for changingprograms and practice. Urban renewal was a juggernaut, and work such asGans and others may have intensified urban renewal as its adocates andsupporters sensed they had a limited time to get their work done. Thevalue of Gans book was that it moved some of Jacobs generalizationsinto a specific neighborhood and ethnic context that could be relatedto other areas. Hong Kong Conflict of Laws Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Hong Kong Conflict of Laws - Term Paper Example This principle was also applied by Bingham J in the case of The Iran Vojdan, where a clause for dispute settlement provided for (a) Iranian law in Iran (b) German law in Hamburg and (c) English law in London. But applying the principle of the closest and most real connection, Lord Bingham held that the proper law to apply would be German law with the proper jurisdiction being the English Courts. Various factors are taken into consideration by the Courts in arriving at a determination of the proper law on the basis of the closest and most real connection, including the place of contracting, the place where the contractual obligations were performed and the principal places of business of the parties4. The application of the closest and most real principle is found under Hong Kongââ¬â¢s choice of law rules with respect to contractual obligations and has also been recommended as a guiding principle when courts experience characterization problems. This principle has also been applied in non-contractual issues, for instance in matters involving capacity, matrimonial issues, including divorce and division of matrimonial assets, trusts and property cases5. One example, is the case of Hayim v Citibank6 which was an appeal from Hong Kong involving issues of trust with Plaintiffââ¬â¢s will having been made in Hong Kong. But the matter was decided under English law, which was held to satisfy the closest and most real principle because no evidence was led as to Hong Kong or American law. There is provision for application of this principle in the law of mainland China as well, under Article 126 of contract law provisions, which states; ââ¬Å"Where parties to the foreign related contract failed to select the applicable law, the contract shall be governed by the law of the country with the closest connection theretoâ⬠7. Joseph Mengele Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Joseph Mengele - Essay Example As a teenager, Mengele proved to be a very brilliant person, and was often praised by his instructors for his great control and self-discipline. He was very delightful, assertive, and good looking. Mengeleââ¬â¢s favorite subjects at school included zoology, physics, and biology, but his most favorite subject was anthropology, which is the study of humans. After graduating in 1930 and wanting to make a name for himself, Mengele left the family business and ventured into medicine. This was the beginning of his infamous career. Mengele soon joined the Nazis and immediately applied for the highest position in society, the SS. The SS was an elite squad that controlled Germanyââ¬â¢s racial cleanliness and strictly adhered to the Nazi beliefs. In the period building up to WWII and during the war, Mengele was drafted and served as a soldier. In addition to fighting on the battlefield, he was able to practice his medical skills and given power to make choices. Mengele was awarded many m edals during his service, including the First Class, Second Class, and two Iron Crosses, for bravery and courage. Later, after becoming wounded on the battlefield, Mengele was sent back to Berlin to conduct his medical experiments, through which he earned the name ââ¬Å"Angel of Death.â⬠Mengele was recognized as the angel of death, inflicting harm and spreading hate to all, including many innocent Jews who were unlucky to encounter him. ââ¬Å"Usually 70 to 90 percent of all new arrivals had been condemned to die without even a passing glance from their judge and jury at Auschwitz. The handsome officer who held omnipotent sway over the fate of all the camp's prisoners was Dr. Josef Mengele, the Angel of Deathâ⬠(trutv). Josef was called the Angel of Death for many reasons. One of them was that he would kill large crowds of people without hesitation. Once there was an infestation of lice in the womenââ¬â¢s section of Auschwitz camp, and Josef came up with an idea to fi x the problem. He gassed all 750 of the women, killing them in order to solve the lice pandemic without hesitation. He was never reluctant to kill and did not think twice about the human cost of his experiments. He specifically conducted experiments on twins, the procedures of which were gruesome and torturous. These experiments included gutting and removing the reproductive organs of his patients (Auschwitz), and injecting chloroform into the hearts of a set of twins at the same time in order to instantly paralyze and then kill them. His nickname, ââ¬Å"Angel of Death,â⬠suited him very well. He lived up to his title through conducting numerous inhumane experiments. Josef Mengele fled from Auschwitz on January 17, 1945 (Mengele) as the Soviet army advanced toward Berlin. During the first few years of the post-war era, Mengele remained in hiding on a farm near his native Gunzburg. He took on a fake identity and began working as a farm hand. Mengele was kept informed of recent political events through his secret contacts with old friends in Gunzburg. Although he still hoped to conduct his research and experiments, it became increasingly apparent that the Allies would not let such a notorious villain escape. Eventually, he died while on the run in a drowning accident in Brazil, after which the body was checked to

The Black and White World of 1984 Seen Through Dark Eyes Essay Example for Free
The Black and White World of 1984 Seen Through Dark Eyes Essay The black and white world of 1984 seen through dark eyes The cafe scene by Salvador Dali was painted in the mid 1900ââ¬â¢s and it depicts two people sitting down for a drink is the primary image but there is a secondary image of a skull that is created by the first image of the people. The paintings beauty and story can be related to George Orwellââ¬â¢s novel 1984 which is a love story about a futuristic science fiction society that is completely controlled by the government. Death was referred to several times in the narrative and it ultimately became the main character Winstonââ¬â¢s destiny. Winstonââ¬â¢s love for the character Julia ultimately became his demise. One may say the painting cafe scene by Salvador Dali and 1984 relate through love, death, and the shades of black and white. Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali I Domenech was born in Spain. As an adult, he made his home with his wife. Many of his paintings reflect his love for Spain. Daliââ¬â¢s painting the cafe scene was painted in the early 1940ââ¬â¢s and reflects nightmares in ââ¬Å"moontideâ⬠(history of art 1). By the time of his death, Salvador Dali had become one of the worldââ¬â¢s most famous artists. Many of his paintings hang in many of the worldââ¬â¢s great museums. The general public embraced his work more than that of other artists. Daliââ¬â¢s paintings and other artistic creations clearly reflected the growing importance of the subconscious on the arts during the modern era. During a career that lasted more than six decades, Dali emerged as one of the most popular and influential painterââ¬â¢s within the Surrealist movement. He became one of many influential artist of the twentieth century, noted not only for his painting but also for numerous other creative parts (Salvador Dali). Dali painting uses shades of black and white to show death, and sorrow sadness these are all words that can describe the society of George Orwellââ¬â¢s 1984. Death can be seen in the painting with the image of the skull and in 1984 with the thought police as said by Winston ââ¬Å"Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime is deathâ⬠(Orwell 28)if you are caught by the thought police you are better off just killing yourself. Winston and Julia both went against the party and theyââ¬â¢re crime sent them to the ministry of luv witch is a section of the government that deals with laws. Death is everywhere in the painting and in 1984. Sorrow and sadness are easily seen in both 1984 and cafe scene, sorrow is seen in the colors of the painting and in the crying eyes of the skull. Sadness is seen in the novel with Winstonââ¬â¢s life at the beginning of the story, his life is described as bleak and terrible the story states that he lived in an apartment complex that reeked of old cabbage and was just dirty. His life at the beginning seemed sad and he seemed as if he didnââ¬â¢t want to live it. Sorrow is also seen in the end when he thinks he was going to die in the ministry of luv, when Oââ¬â¢Brien released the ratââ¬â¢s that was a time a sheer terror and sadness. Doing actions such as protesting having sex go against the party is often compared to as death was said by the main character Winston ââ¬Å"At the sight of the words I love you the desire to stay alive had welled up in himâ⬠(Orwell 110). Love is almost forbidden in the society of Oceania, this and Daliââ¬â¢s painting show how love may be equal to death. The skull shows death while the two people having drink can demonstrate love and those two people could be seen as Winston and Julia. Winston and Julia have a love that is frowned upon by the society and by the government, and if they are to confess their love it will most certainly be their death. 984 and ââ¬Å"cafe sceneâ⬠clearly relate through love by displaying two people sitting down and drinking. Those people can be compared to and seen as Winston and Juliet, Winston and Juliet fall in love through anything but normal fashion. The way these people fall in love is through sheer chance, Winston dreaming of killing Juliet, when he told Juliet about his thoughts of bashing her head in with a brick and raping her she just laughed this is close to a sign telling the reader they are truly in love. Love is a key component that is seen in ââ¬Å"cafe sceneâ⬠and in the narrative of 1984. Black is compared to death, evil, and mystery; black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown. Black is not a color, It is the absence of all color. When people speak of opposites, it is usually in terms of black and white. Black, and its opposite white, represents poles. Black absorbs all parts of light. While white opens up, black shuts down. It has come to mean disclosed, fearful. It is linked to the unknown or the unseen. In times of fear and uncertainty black contains the energy of the threatening unknown. It usually has a negative feeling to it, black contrasts well with bright colors such as white. The painting has a large amount of black inside of it and that black tells a story about all the death and secrecy in the world of 1984. In Oceania it is futile to go against the government because the house always wins, Winston and his lover had tried to fight against the system in their own way and they failed. This failure had been the cause to Winstonââ¬â¢s death. The amount of secrecy in Oceania is infinite, actions the government uses are kept secret. all the reasons they do it is a secret and the reasoning behind the reasoning is a secret. The color of black can correlate to 1948 through death and secrecy. White is compared with light, goodness, innocence, and purity. It is considered to be the color of holiness and perfection. White means safety, purity, and cleanliness. As opposed to black, white usually has a positive feel. White is not a color, but the overall binging of all color. In many cultures it represents openness and truth. White has a cold quality but at the same time a warming one. It has a feeling that you can move toward anything and overcome any obstacle. Winston is almost an innocent person in 1984 he is a random man who goes through his day in day out routine until he is given a chance to fall in love and change everything in his world. At one point in the novel he feels as if nothing can stand in his way even the government and this is when he defies it and does as he pleases. This shows the correlation between the shade white and 1984. Bothe classic pieces of art changed the way people thought in those fields of art. Orwell had inspired many writers with his dis-utopian society ever since his release of 1984 back in the 1940ââ¬â¢s. Many stories have copied a type of society in their stories such as starship troopers and other literary works of art, Daliââ¬â¢s art also influenced painters with his use of cubism and realism. The work of Orwell and Dali still influence the world today even after their deaths and their works show love, death and they can also show the shades of black and white.

The Grim Grotto: Elements of Fiction :: essays research papers
There are many elements of fiction. All of them together are a recipe for the perfect story. There are five elements all together. They are conflict, setting, character, plot and theme. ââ¬Å"The Grim Grottoâ⬠displays all of these elements with an exceptionally well written storyline. Conflict is a very significant factor of fiction. Without conflict there would be no story. The main conflict in ââ¬Å"The Grim Grottoâ⬠is locating the sugar bowl and keeping it away from Count Olaf. The opposing forces are Count Olafââ¬â¢s troupe and the Baudelaire orphans. This conflict was never resolved within the book. However, there are many subordinate conflicts in this story. The first subordinate conflict is finding Quigley Quagmire and meeting him at the last safe place. The conflict is in between the Baudelaire orphans and Count Olaf. This is the Baudelaireââ¬â¢s conflict. Another one is saving the youngest Baudelaire-Sunny from the poisonous Medusoid Mycelium. This is Sunnyââ¬â¢s conflict because she is suffering from the Medusoid Mycelium. All of these conflicts were external conflicts because they are about characters against each other and not about emotions. I agree with the way that the characters try to solve the conflict because they refuse to give up on anything. They didnââ¬â¢t give up when they had to save Sunny or get away from the Medusoid Mycelium. ââ¬Å"There must be something we can do to save Sunny. There just has to be something.â⬠The importance of the conflict is huge. This is because the characters go to great lengths to try and get the sugar bowl. They travel underwater and go to the darkest of places to reach the sugar bowl. They go through numerous dangers just for a little sugar bowl. They go through the Medusoid Mycelium and a huge submarine just for a sugar bowl. You also know this because many characters, such as Captain Widdershins, Count Olaf and Quigley Quagmire say that this object is too important and secretive to reveal its purpose. The climax of this book is when Violet Klaus and Sunny are walking to the taxi parting with Mr. Poe. This is the climax of the book because this was the highest point of interest and appeal. The author, Lemony Snicket, uses details and delays the end to an extent where you become very anxious to read the story. Setting is an important aspect in some stories and less important in others.

Effective Communication In Health and Social Care Essay
Understand effective communication and interpersonal interaction in Health and Social Care â⬠¢Produce a staff handbook for new staff at a residential setting for people with learning difficulties and other communication difficulties including different forms of communication needs and preferences and the role of effective communication in team work and supporting individuals. Emily Rhodes Contents Page The two main contexts in which health and social care workers use the communication cycle are one-to-one and group communication. One-to-one Communication ââ¬â This interaction often involves a three stage process. 1) Greeting or warming up, 2) conversation or information exchange, 3) farewells or winding down. When you start a conversation with somebody you have to try and make them feel relaxed and it is important to create a positive emotional atmosphere. Very often people will start a one-to-one communication with a greeting such as ââ¬ËGood Morningââ¬â¢, as this shows you are helping them to feel relaxed by showing a positive and friendly attitude. This type of communication is effective within a health and social care environment because, if a nurse/carer had a new resident, then they have to set an example, so that the resident will feel safe, and will be able to build trust with the nurse/carer. Group Communication ââ¬â This type of communication is only effective if everyone within the group wants to be involved. It is right that the group has the right emotional atmosphere, as people may feel threatened, or mayà not be confident enough to speak up within a formal group conversation. Group maintenance is important, as this enables people to create the right atmosphere. Having a group leader can be useful, because they will be able to encourage people to express their ideas, and make sure people take their turn when talking. This type of communication is effective within health and social care as there are many meetings, which could be discussing a residentââ¬â¢s needs/preferences. This is effective because everyoneââ¬â¢s ideas will be taken into consideration and will be able to get the best outcome. However this type of communication can be confusing for people with hearing impairments, as if a person is deaf, they focus on one person to do sign language so itââ¬â¢s not too confusing for them, but in a group, a lot of stuff can be misunderstood and would be too confusing. Communication between colleagues ââ¬â Communicating with people at work is different that communicating with friends and family. This is because it is important to show respect to your work colleagues, as if this happens, you may fail to show respect to the people who use care services. Also colleagues have to develop trust with each other, and itââ¬â¢s important to show that you have respect for the confidentiality of a colleague. This type of communication is often informal but it is important that care workers use skilled communication in order to develop respect and trust. This type of communication is effective in health and social care, as it can boost productivity and improve employee satisfaction. Formal ââ¬â Formal communication is quite common within health and social care work. This type of language shows resect to others and shows your powerfulness, however formal language can sometimes come across as being ââ¬Ëtoo poshââ¬â¢ or pretentious. This type of language is understood by a wide range of people, however some ââ¬Ëspeech communitiesââ¬â¢ may find it hard to understand so care workers usually adjust the way they speak in order for them to understand. An example of formal language in a health and social care setting would be a social services desk, they may greet you with a ââ¬ËGood Morning, How may I help you?ââ¬â¢ rather than ââ¬ËWhat you after then?ââ¬â¢. It shows respect and makes the person they are speaking to feel more welcome. Informal ââ¬â This type of communication is often used when we know them person we are speaking too, well, for example friends and family. These types of groups may use language that can only be understood between them, or local groups from particular areas may only use language that they understand. In health and social care this type of communication may only be used between staff. This is because if a care worker was to use informal language to a resident or patient, they may not understand or they may feel uncomfortable with how they are being spoken too. However if staff were to say to each other ââ¬Ëhiya, howââ¬â¢s it goinââ¬â¢ they may just feel like this is a warm friendly greeting. Communication Forms: Communication enables us to give ideas and information. It helps people to feel safe, to form relationships and develop self-esteem. Text Messaging ââ¬â This type of communication within a residential setting for people with learning and communication difficulties, would be effective as if a person is deaf, or with hearing impairments than text messaging things like doctorââ¬â¢s appointments would not only make sure that they are reminded, but also that they have understood properly. They also would be able to correct themselves if they have misunderstood a translator. Written Communication ââ¬â This type of communication would be effective as when something is written down you can analyze it and change any mistakes or add anything in, which makes it reliable, whereas if youââ¬â¢re talking, changing your words all the time can be misinterpreted or it can cause service users to receive the wrong care or cause conflict between people. If a resident has autism for example, they find it difficult to form social relationships with people, so oral communication wouldnââ¬â¢t be as effective, whereas just writing something down could make them feel more comfortable. Oral Communication ââ¬â This type of communication would be effective in this particular health and social care environment, as if there is a person with dyslexia, it may be easier to speak to them orally, and repeat yourself, for them to understand, rather than writing something down which they may not beà able to read properly and this may be easier for them to misinterpret what youââ¬â¢re trying to say. It is also used in many other care environments, like doctorââ¬â¢s surgeries, hospitals and old peopleââ¬â¢s homes. Oral communication in this environment would be effective as it enables care workers give important information quicker than written, and also explain medication so that the patient knows what to do. It can also help someone to gain trust for their doctor etc., as they will be able to comfort them through oral communication. Symbols ââ¬â The use of symbols whether it be written or diagrams, all communicate different messages to people, such as traffic signs. In this particular setting, the use of Makaton will be used greatly, due to it helping people with learning disabilities, develop their language skills. Makaton may speak a word and perform a sign using hands and body language, and also there is a large range of symbols which also help people with learning disabilities communicate with others. Technology ââ¬â Information technology helps to provide enlarged visual displays of voice descriptions for people with visual impairments. This type of communication can support the residents because there is also voice typing for people with dyslexia, which can turn speech into writing. Some of the electronic communication systems can be activated by air pressure, meaning that a person can communicate using an oral tube connected to computerized equipment. However a more simpler way of using technology to communicate would be things like flash cards or picture books, which will improve the communication for people who do not use a spoke language or signed language. Interpersonal interaction. Speech ââ¬â Speaking clearly is essential when working with people with service users, as they may have problem with receiving or giving messages. Different localities, ethnic groups and work cultures all have their own words that they use; these may be referred to as different speech communities. Some people may feel threatened or excluded by these different speech communities. Some people think that just using formal language will solve the problem, but that is wrong, because care workers, who use jargon, canà also create barriers for people who are not part of that different speech community. So in this type of setting speech would be very important as if a person has learning disabilities or hearing impairments for example, then speaking clearly would allow them to lip read, and understand what is being said. First Language ââ¬â This is the language in which you are brought up from birth to think and communicate with. People who learn a second language later on in life canââ¬â¢t communicate their thoughts as effectively as they can with their first language. This is usually the preferred language as they have been learned to think like that growing up. In a care setting, this type of interaction is important as if someone has learnt a different language, like polish for example, then their accent may change from their English accent, and make service users find what they are trying to say, hard to understand, as they have learning disabilities, they may get confused. Non-verbal communication ââ¬â This type of communication is a way of studying a person so that you can understand whether theyââ¬â¢re feeling sad, tired, happy, angry or frightened without speaking. It refers to the messages we are sending but without using words. These messages are sent by our eyes, tone of our voice, facial expressions, position of hands and arms, gestures with hands and arms, the angle of our head and body posture. This type of communication is important in health and social care because it allows the care worker to see if a person is feeling sad or If they care worker has suggested something, and the patient/resident agrees with what they have said, they may not be thinking that, and show this with their emotions, so then the care worker can see this and then adjust what they have said. It is important in this setting because people with learning disabilities like autism, find it difficult talking to people about their emotions, so care workers can interpret this and help them without them having to struggle, however a care worker may also interpret it in the wrong way and do the wrong things. Posture ââ¬â The way that you sit or stand can make a difference to how a person receives messages from you. As a care worker you can sometimes be misinterpreted, as if you have your arms crossed it can mean ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m not taking any noticeââ¬â¢ but even if you just find it comfy, as a care worker you should never have your arms crossed, as it doesnââ¬â¢t make you look respectable.à Leaning back whilst sat down can send messages like your relaxed or bored. So sitting forward would make you look involved and like you are bothered and interested. This is important as a care worker, working with people with disabilities as they may already feel lonely etc. so when you are folding your arms and leaning back this can make them feel worse. Facial Expression ââ¬â Your face can indicate your emotional state. If a care worker was listening to what a resident was saying, then it is important for the care worker to convey the right impression. If the care worker was to smile it would indicate agreement or approvement of the message being received, where as a scowl would indicate dis pleasure and disagreement. Most people can recognize emotions from others, but you also have to understand your nonverbal behavior may influence others. Touch ââ¬â Touching another person can send messages of affection, care, power over them or sexual interest. To help you to understand what their touch may mean, the social setting and body language will play a massive part in helping you understand, however touch can be easily misinterpreted. A care worker may hold a personââ¬â¢s hand to reassure them and comfort them, but this can be interpreted as an attempt to dominate them. In health and social care, this type of interaction is helpful as it is a way of communication without words, for example if a person was unable to speak, they may have dyslexia, then touch would allow the care worker to communicate to them without having to speak or make them speak, if the resident was to need a bit of affection, to reassure them, they may touch the care worker for them to touch back, however making sure this is done in an appropriate manner. Proximity ââ¬â This is the space between you and the person that you are communicating with. It shows how friendly or intimate the conversation is. There are different cultures which have different customs regarding the proximity between people when they are talking. In Britain there are expectations for how far you should be away from someone. An armââ¬â¢s length away would be when talking to strangers, although shaking hands may bring you closer. Relatives and partners may not have restrictions as to how far or close they can come. In this setting, proximity is very important as if a care worker assumes that it is fine to enter the personal space of a service user, without asking or explaining why then this can be seen as dominating /or being aggressive. Communication and Language needs and preferences: the individuals preferred method of communication. It is important to understand that many people use different types of communication which are specific to them. If a person uses British Sign Language for example, it may be important to employ an interpreter. However some carerââ¬â¢s learn these things so that they are able to communicate with people. A person who is blind or has visual impairments may use braille as opposed to text, so that they can read information. British Sign Language ââ¬â BSL is the preferred language for many deaf people within the UK. It was recognized as an official language for deaf people in 2003, which has led to funding and an increased awareness of the language and how much it helps deaf people to communicate. In this health and social care setting, BSL would be important for communicating to the residents who are deaf, as it is important to talk to them about their medication, needs or preferences. Itââ¬â¢s also important for the care workers to be able to understand what the deaf people are trying to say, and so that the care workers understand what they want. Makaton ââ¬â This is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is mostly commonly used for people with learning disabilities, as it is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order, so that if the speech is unclear, the symbols may help a person to understand. So if the child or adult with the learning disability has trouble with their speech, Makaton will support this and then many people drop the signs and symbols naturally at their own pace as they develop speech, but some people use Makaton for their whole lives. Braille ââ¬â Braille is used for people who are blind or visual impairments. It allows them to read text and write information. It is a system of raised marks that can be felt by the fingers. It can be processed by modernà computer software, and be printed out using special printers. It is effective as it allows the blind to be able to read and write through touch, meaning that they can communication with other people, important in health and social care, as they will be able to explain pain or read their own medication etc. Argyles Communication Cycle For communication to be effective it involves a two way process in which each person tries to understand the view point of the other person. Good communication involves the process of checking, understanding, and using reflective or active listening. An example of this would be when working with a resident and the care worker using touch when listening to a resident, as this can be shown as effective, and can show that the message was received and decoded, but this can be misinterpreted if not used in the right way. Another example would be if a care worker is explaining something to a patient, the patient will show understanding by nodding or using other nonverbal communication. This shows that the patient has received the message clearly and has understood the care worker, which will then allow the care worker to know that the patient is sure what has been said. This is important in this setting as people with learning disabilities find it more difficult to understand things, so sh owing understanding will allow the care worker to either help the resident or know that they understand the conversation. This is the communication cycle: 1 An idea occurs ââ¬â You have an idea of what you want to communicate 2 Message coded ââ¬â You think through how you are going to say what you are thinking. You put your thoughts into language or into some other code such as sign language. 3 Message sent ââ¬â You speak or perhaps you sign, write, or send a message in some other way. 4 Message received ââ¬â The other person has to sense your message, they hear your words or see your symbols. 5 Message decoded ââ¬â The other person has to interpret your message. However this is not always easy as the other person may make assumptions about your words orà body language. 6 Message understood ââ¬â If it all goes well then your ideas will be understood but it might not be the first time. Tuckmanââ¬â¢s Stages of Group Interaction The communication within groups can be influenced by how people feel with each other. When people meet for the first time they often go through a process of group formation, which will allow them to communicate effectively. Tuckmanââ¬â¢s theory is set into four stages: 1 Forming 2 Storming 3 Norming 4 Performing 1 ââ¬â Forming is the first stage which involves group members to form a team or group discussion. At this stage the members would ask questions about the purpose or aims of the group and also share information. This stage is important because it allows people to exchange personal information and get to know each other. 2 ââ¬â Storming is the second stage which involves the growth of the group. This stage eliminates the strong groups from the weaker ones, and some groups may not make it past this stage. The relationships will either be made or broken at this stage, it is important for the team to have a strong leadership at this stage. 3 ââ¬â Norming is the third stage in which all the team agree on the rules and values by which they operate. They begin to trust each other and individuals may take greater responsibilities so the leader can now take a step back. Personal, intimate and realm opinions are expressed in this stage. 4 ââ¬â Performing is the last stage and not all teams make it to this stage. Structural issues are resolved in this stage which allows roles to become flexible and functional and group energy is channeled into the task. There is a high level of respect in the group and they are more strategically aware of what is to be done.
